“Photography offers the mere mortal a way to conquer time”

My current project combines my life long loves of photography and the aquatic realm. Essential to life, water is at once both attractive and troublesome, universal and elusive, elemental and transitory, playful and destructive. It is home to more life forms than any of Earth's biomes. Water has been the foundation of my life.

Being a passionate kayaker affords me a unique perspective on this ubiquitous substance. From the cockpit of my boat I paddle in intimate contact with the water, and all else that is in it. While gliding by on the top, I wonder what I might look like to a fish looking up from the depths? What do they see under the pond lilies or while muscling up rapids to spawn? The patterns in the moving water always changing, never repeating; the camera is my butterfly net chasing the untamable that I covet.

Sense of place is the heart of this project, all images are from my native New England, with a focus on Vermont, Northern New Hampshire & Maine. My equipment ranges from digital underwater cameras to a 1939 Rolleicord TLR passed down from my father. I enjoy a more natural, spontaneous look to my work, with minimal processing, but play with digital manipulation when so moved. I have offered photography alongside my watercolor artwork under the Trail Magic Studio name since 2008, and have shown work in Vermont, New Hampshire and online galleries. I live with my spouse and cats on our solar off-grid homestead in Western Vermont, a bountiful landscape full of water, flowing and frozen.
